Did you know

Kyary hosts a TV show in Japan called Moshi Moshi Nippon.

With her viral electronic dance hit “PonPonPon” in 2011, fashion blogger and model Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, also known as KPP, suddenly rocketed to fame as a singer.

The 21-year-old pop sensation stands out with her catchy songs, distinctive fashion sense and candy-coloured music videos. “PonPonPon” was included on her debut EP, Moshi Moshi Harajuku, and was successful in Japan and internationally in Belgium and Finland, where it topped the iTunes electronic songs chart.

In 2012, Kyary released her first album, Pamyu Pamyu Revolution, which featured her catchy chart-topping song “Candy Candy.” A year later, the stylish singer embarked on her 100% KPP World Tour, which included stops in Singapore, Paris, London and New York.

In the same year, Kyary released her second album, Nanda Collection, which included the smash hit “Fashion Monster.” To promote that album, Kyary began her Nanda Collection World Tour, which will include a concert in Bangkok.

As Kyary gets ready to perform at BCC Hall, Central Plaza Ladprao on June 28, the cute pop star took time out to answer some questions for Student Weekly via email. Kyary told us about her latest album and her world tours.

Student Weekly: What did you think of the Sonic Bang festival in Bangkok last year?

Kyary: I felt really honoured to be a part of such a great event. I love performing at music festivals.

Student Weekly: How do you feel about performing in Bangkok again as part of your Nanda Collection World Tour?

Kyary: I’m really excited to meet everybody in Bangkok again.

Student Weekly: Why do many songs on Nanda Collection mention the transition from youth to adulthood?

Kyary: I released my first album when I was 18 years old, and I’m now 21. I think I’m more grown-up now, so my songs are more about growing up and becoming a better person.

Student Weekly: How do you keep up the energy needed to sing and dance during your performances?

Kyary: To be honest, performing live is very tiring. I don’t feel it much onstage, but I’m always exhausted after a show. But during a tour, the more I perform, the more I get used to it.

Student Weekly: How did you feel about your first world tour, the 100% KPP World Tour?

Kyary: I was really worried and nervous, but I was able to gain courage and strength from my fans. I was so glad that I made it and was happy with the success of the tour. I learned so much from my first world tour.

Student Weekly: Do you enjoy seeing fans dress up like you?

Kyary: It’s always overwhelming! Some fans spend a lot of time making gorgeous costumes and come to see my overseas concerts. I like it when they come up with their own original designs.

Student Weekly: Since you are the official kawaii ambassador of Harajuku, what does kawaii mean to you?

Kyary: I think everybody has a different definition of the word kawaii. For me, it doesn’t just mean cute. It can describe amazing, scary or funny ideas that make the world a more charming place.

Student Weekly: Which fashion item are you obsessed with the most?

Kyary: I always have sunglasses with me when I go out. I’m currently obsessed with a pair of cute pink sunglasses that I got in London.

Student Weekly: Do you have any special message for your fans?

Kyary: This world tour will be better than my first one. Let us amaze you with our performance, stage decorations and music. Though I’m a little nervous, I will do my best. Please come to the show!
