SW takes a trip to southern Thailand

Betong is a well-known district in Yala, southern Thailand. It has a population of about 60,000 people and a number of tourist attractions.

For this week's Freeze Frame, SW takes a look at ways of life and popular sites in the district.

Above: Betong Hot Spring is a popular picnic place for locals and visitors.

Above: The area is famous for Betong-style khao man kai (steamed chicken with rice).

Above: A visitor takes a photo of a massive fig tree standing near the exit of Piyamit Tunnel. There are walkways leading visitors to the tree trunk.

Above: The Piyamit Tunnel was a hiding place for a Malay insurgent group in the past. The tunnel was built by 50 men over a period of three months.

Above: Two visitors sit in front of a 3.2-metre mailbox. Built in 1924, the 92-year-old mailbox still remains in use.
