Volunteer shot in the South

A defence volunteer was killed on April 23 in a drive-by shooting in the southernmost province of Narathiwat.

Mama-anwa Baka, 51, was returning home from a rubber plantation when he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle. His body was found lying face down on a road in Sungai Kolok district. He had been shot once in the chest. Mama-anwa’s motorcycle was found lying beside his body.

Police are still investigating whether the murder was linked to a personal conflict or the southern insurgency.

Students seek skills

The number of Thai students enrolled in local international universities is expected to increase sharply in the next five years, as students look to equip themselves with the skills needed to compete with the regional workforce, according to an academic organisation.

Laureate Thailand CEO Gilles Mahe on April 23 said that a survey conducted by his company found 60 percent of tertiary-level students in Thailand want to study in international programmes. However only 3 percent are enrolled in such courses.

"Thai students are paying more attention to improving their English," Gilles explained.
