Chon Buri schoolgirl awarded Young Artist prize

Chon Buri teenager Hataiwan Thepmalee has beaten 108 entrants to become the 2012 Young Artist of Thailand.

The 17-year-old girl from Darasamutr School in Chon Buri took first prize along with the prestigious Royal Trophy given by HM the King in a ceremony held recently at the Sukhothai Hotel.

The annual competition, which began in 2008, is organised by the Royal Over-Seas League. It is intended to foster the development of young Thai artists, and provide the opportunity to have their work exhibited in the UK.

Hataiwan will travel with an escort to London on Jet Airways where she will receive free accommodation at Overseas House, the global headquarters of the Royal Over-Seas League.

Hataiwan's winning entry Private World depicted Thai family life today and the impact of technology on human interaction.

"Technology makes communication easier and more convenient, but on the other hand, it makes us anti-social," she says. "We ignore family and people around us. Although the people in the painting are in the same room, they do not look at one another. They only live in the 'square' in their hands, as if they live in their own world."

All finalists in the competition, including Hataiwan, will have their work shown at a special exhibition in Overseas House later this year.

Commenting on the award, chairman of the Royal Over-Seas League Council in Thailand Jim Napier said the standard of entries in 2102 was very high and had prompted the judges to award two "highly recommended" awards for the two runners-up.

"This was a competition of exceptional quality," said Napier. "While there can be only one winner, the judges felt compelled to recognise the excellence of the runners-up with the unprecedented 'highly recommended' acknowledgement."

Receiving the highly commended award were Kasidis Laoboonmee of Shrewsbury International School for Bomb-Shell-Shock and Mairin Sirisahawat of St John's International School for Ying Yang.
