Police respond to “Evil Man from Krabi”

As of this morning, the video "Evil Man from Krabi" has received over 400,000 views on youtube since it was released several weeks ago.

The video, a musical condemnation of the Thai system of criminal justice, was produced by the father of a 27-year-old Dutch woman who was allegedly beaten and raped in Krabi in late July by a Thai tour guide.

The suspect was arrested by police but quickly released by the provincial court on bail, angering the father.

The video, coupled with news of the stabbing of a British tourist protecting his girlfriend from a mob sex attack on a Krabi beach, have resulted in a large number of tourists cancelling their holidays in this southern beach province.

The negative publicity has clearly stunned local police who have been struggling to find an appropriate response.

Last week Pol Maj Gen Nantadet Yoinual, chief of police in Krabi, called a press conference to deny the father's claim that police allowed "easy" bail.

Pol Maj Gen Nanthadet said the police obtained an arrest warrant on July 29 and arrested the suspect on Aug 20.

The court granted the accused’s bail request over the objections of provincial police, he said.

The Krabi police chief said the police have completed their case and are ready to present it to the prosecutors.

Realising that a press conference is inadequate to quell the continuing criticism, Krabi police have now turned to youtube themselves, producing a four-and-a-half minute rebuttal of “Evil Man in Krabi”.

Entitled “The truth from Krabi,” the video, in the Thai language, says the critics do not understand the three-step Thai legal system.

Police are responsible for investigation, the video explains, and if the evidence indicates a crime has been committed, the case is forwarded to prosecutors. If the prosecutors agree, they are responsible for taking the case to the court. The final decision rests with the court, including whether a suspect’s bail request should be granted.
