After spending his teens and early twenties as both a soap actor and singer in the band Siplor, Hugo Chakrabongse left Thailand to work as a musician in the US. Now he’s back in Thailand with his second solo album. Deep in the Long Grass unites Hugo’s love of retro rock ‘n’ roll with modern synthesiser sounds, all brought together to great effect.

The album’s opening single, “Twitch and Tug,” provides listeners with a taste of Hugo’s vintage musical influences, in this case being a Delta blues-style slide guitar. The song avoids being too old-fashioned by adding a cool electronic bass line which sounds like it came from a recent nightclub track.

Several of the other songs, including his latest single, “Nightshift,” have more of a laid-back feel yet still have experimental moments. Overall, Deep in the Long Grass has a cool variety of styles and moods, all tied together with Hugo’s strong melodies and vocal hooks. — GB
