Letter of the week

SLOW WALKERS

Most people say that Thai people are slow walkers. This made me think about the way we developed as a country.

Last week I was refused by a taxi to take me to the Skytrain station, and this made me very angry. I was refused several times and had to wait for about half an hour to get a taxi to get there.

I think as a country, Thailand must improve rules and regulations with people thinking and sticking to them, not just doing what we want.

Teera Siribunsuk,
Bangkok

I have to say that I agree with you, Teera. Many's the time that I've had to wait a very long time to get a taxi because the drivers didn't feel like taking me where I wanted to go. It's no wonder that people are reacting so positively to services like Uber, that will take you where you want to go with no problems. That's the way the free market works. The better the service, the more people want it. If there are problems that continue to pop up, sometimes the government needs to get involved with laws and regulations. — Editor

ENDANGERED ANIMALS

Last weekend I went to Chatuchak Weekend Market with my friends. Right now it is the cool season, so it was not too hot there during the day.

My favourite area of the market is the pet area. There are many kinds of animals from fish to dogs to cats to squirrels. There are even some exotic animals there.

I sometimes worry about the animals in that area. It seems to me that it might be easy for them to get sick. I also think that some of the animals they have for sale there are illegal to own.

Wimonpat Santhadpanich,
Bangkok

I was just through there a month or so ago, Wimonpat. I agree that there do seem to be quite a few animals there that it is probably illegal for people to own. I also agree that there is probably a chance that some of the animals there are not very healthy. I wish that people would not buy exotic animals. It seems cruel to take those poor beasts out of their native habitats and put them up for sale. — Editor

NEW YEAR'S WISHES

It is very close to the new near. It is a time to think about the year ahead and to maybe plan things you would like to achieve or do.

Many people start to diet or exercise at the new year. Some people set goals. Some people try to kick bad habits like drinking or smoking.

I don’t really have any plans, and I don’t have any bad habits to give up. But I hope that next year is brighter than this last one.

Keng Jantima,
Bangkok

I think that many of us are hoping that this year is better than the last, Keng. There certainly was a lot of bad news in 2014. But, honestly, I think you could say that about a lot of years. There was also some good news. I suppose it really depends a great deal on your point of view. — Editor
