Zoo seeks to keep animals

The Zoological Park Organisation and the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry will seek cabinet backing for their bid to keep giant pandas Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui on loan at Chiang Mai Zoo for another decade.

Baripat Siriaroonrat, the organisation’s panda research chief, said on September 18 that the organisation has secured an informal agreement with China granting the extension, in which Thailand would pay China about 45 million baht a year.

If the cabinet agrees, a formal contract could be signed with China in the next two months, Baripat said.


Judges dropped

Suspected drug trafficker flees

The Judicial Commission has dismissed three Appeal Court judges for granting bail to a drug suspect who later fled.

The judges are Akewirote Maneethanawan, former chief justice of Min Buri Court, Pralom Khachen, a former judge at Min Buri Court, and Chuwong La-ongsiriwong, a senior judge at Min Buri Court.

The commission said on September 18 that the judges granted bail to a suspect accused of possessing about 2,000 methamphetamine pills, which exceeded the limit allowed by court regulations when considering bail requests.

Train derails in Songkla

A train derailed in Songkla’s Chana district. It happened on September 18. Seven people were injured. The train was travelling from Narathiwat to Nakhon Si Thammarat. Police were investigating the cause of the incident.
