Human traffic

Eighty-eight defendants in a high-profile Rohingya human trafficking case, are brought to the Criminal Court in Bangkok on November 9 for the beginning of their trial.

Abbot passes

Celebrated and highly respected abbot Luang Phor Khoon passes away in Nakhon Ratchasima on May 16. He was 91 years old.

Bangkok bomb

A bomb explodes at Ratchaprasong Intersection in Bangkok on August 17. Twenty people are killed.

Record-breaking biking

More than 130,000 people on August 16 take part in the Bike for Mom event held in honour of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 83rd birthday anniversary. It is the largest ever bicycle parade, according to Guinness World Records.

Holiday over

Kittisak Matthujad, a key suspect in the 1.6-billion-baht King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) embezzlement scandal, is arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport on May 21 after stepping off a flight from England.

Paris horror

A series of coordinated terrorist attacks hits Paris in France on November 13. About 130 people are killed. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claim responsibility for the incident. — AFP

Typhoon hits

A resident walks past big waves spilling over a wall onto a coastal road in the city of Legaspi in southern Manila, the Philippines on December 14, as Typhoon Melor approaches the city. More than 700,000 people flee the central Philippines to safer places. — AFP

Myanmar democracy

Myanmar people wait to cast their ballot at a polling station in Mandalay, Myanmar on November 8. The country successfully holds its first general elections since 1990. — EPA

Jet crash

People on November 4 lay flowers at a makeshift memorial in Saint Petersburg in Russia as they pray for the victims of the Russian Metrojet Airbus A321, which crashed on October 31 in Egypt. All 224 people on the flight were killed. — AFP

Hospital blaze

Firefighters work among the debris of a psychiatric hospital that was destroyed by a fire in in Voronezh, southern Russia on December 12. The incident killed 23 psychiatric patients. — AFP

Bus plunge

A bus carrying police officers on December 14 falls off a bridge in Potrerillos, northwestern Argentina. Forty-one people are killed. — AFP

Huge earthquake

On September 16, an 8.3-magnitude quake hits Valparaiso, the north of Chile. About one million people evacuate and at least eight people are killed. — AP
