Man found with drugs in gut

Rio De Janeiro — A 20-year-old Irishman was arrested with 830 grams of cocaine in his gut as he was trying to board a flight in Sao Paulo, headed for Brussels.

Officers became suspicious because the man appeared nervous. When questioned, he admitted that he'd swallowed capsules of cocaine. He was taken to a hospital, where he expelled 72 capsules of the drug. He was arrested on suspicion of international drug trafficking and could face five to 15 years in prison if found guilty. — AP

Study explains sad kids

London — British children are trapped in a cycle of compulsive consumption as parents shower them with gifts to make up for their long working hours, according to a UNICEF report released on September 14.

The study, commissioned after British children were ranked by the UN as the unhappiest in the industrialised world, blamed the results partly on a lack of family interaction. — AFP

Skeletons found in waterway

Basra, Iraq — The skeletons of three sailors who were aboard an Iraqi commercial vessel sunk by Iran's air force in 1988 were found during the dredging of a southern waterway.

"While the Khor Zubair waterway was being dredged, an Iraqi-owned shipping vessel known as the Ramadi was found with three skeletons inside," a Basra ports official said.

The Iran-Iraq war left around one million people dead and thousands missing on both sides. — AFP

Eight arrested in drug haul

Hong Kong — Hong Kong police have made the territory's largest ever cocaine bust, seizing 567 kilogrammes of the drug, worth around 2.3 billion baht.

Eight people were arrested, ranging in age from 24 to 55. Those detained included an American man, a Colombian woman with Hong Kong residency and five Mexicans.

"The cocaine could have come into Hong Kong by land or sea, but we're still trying to find out which," a narcotics bureau officer said. — AFP

Prisoners killed in fire

Ankara, Turkey — Five prisoners burned to death when a prison van caught fire in a town in central Turkey. Mehmet Ozel, an official in the central Anatolian town of Pinarbasi, said the blaze was believed to have started in the engine section and quickly engulfed the van.

Soldiers in the front were unable to open the locked doors to the rear section holding the prisoners.

The inmates were being transferred from the eastern city of Van to another prison in Istanbul. — AP
