Letter of the week

KNIT WITTY

I've learned how to crochet scarves and blouses by watching videos on YouTube. There are several channels that teach crochet methods. I watched them repeatedly so that I could learn step by step.

It's quite a pleasure to do because it's a nice activity that I like. Crocheting and knitting are good for meditation as well.

I'm proud to make things that I can give as gifts to people whom I love. They're special because they are DIY.

Supaluck Amnuaychailert,
Bangkok

Making gifts yourself is a great idea, Supaluck. There's nothing quite as touching as receiving a hand-made gift that's made with love and care. It's also nice that you've learned a handicraft that perhaps a lot of people don't know how to do. — Editor

QUESTIONING EDUCATION

I recently read an article about the education system in Thailand. I found it intriguing and quite peculiar. It's certain that there are various tutoring centers in Thailand that provide support for the students in need.

However, this is getting rather bizarre as nearly all the students are seeking extra lessons, even though they have the potential to do well on their own.

Should they think again before signing up for extra classes? Should they use their leisure time more effectively by participating in events such as sports, drama and music — rather than doing something that they could have done on their own?

Patcharapol Lee,
Bangkok

I think that having a well-rounded education experience is much more important than cramming nothing but facts and figures into your head, Patcharapol. You're right to point out that not every kid needs all the extra classes they get in cram schools. Some do; some don't. But spending every spare minute bent over a book or sitting in class isn't good for physical or mental well-being. A well-rounded mind is a more agile mind, and an agile mind is more likely to be successful in life. — Editor

NEW YEAR'S SPLASH

I can't wait until Songkran. Now that my exams are over, the thing to look forward to is Thai New Year. I think that it is probably the most-fun holiday ever.

Many older people complain that there is too much water splashing. They want Songkran to be celebrated in a more traditional way.

But I think that young people really enjoy splashing. It is the most fun part of this holiday.

Pichai Bantuvachiraporn,
Bangkok

I know a lot of people feel the same way that you do, Pichai. I've celebrated Songkran in the kingdom for 12 years already — this year will be my 13th. I do think that people do grow less and less interested in all that splashing as they get older, and that's just fine. Just remember to be careful. Watch out for cars, don't drink if you're under age, and never, ever get into a vehicle if the driver's been drinking. — Editor
