First floods

Lampang hit with heavy rain

Lampang has declared one of its 13 districts a flood disaster zone, according to provincial governor Thawatchai Therdphaothai. It was the first flood-related disaster announcement in the North this year.

The disaster was declared in Ban Auam sub-district of Muang district after the area was hit by flash floods and mountain run-off triggered by heavy rain on May 5 and 6.

The governor said that he instructed officials in Lampang’s other districts to brace for floods, storms and mudslides. He has also put a 24-hour emergency unit on standby.

Holiday horror

Tourist missing after accident

A Taiwanese tourist has gone missing after a tour boat she was in capsized in the reservoir of Ratchaprapa dam in Ban Ta Khun district of Surat Thani province on May 10.

Rescuers managed to pull out Thai boat operator Adipong Wichiankaew and three foreign tourists, however they were unable to find the fourth tourist.

Eyewitnesses said the four tourists hired the long-tailed boat operated by Adipong to take them out on the lake for fishing and sightseeing. The boat capsized after hitting a floating tree trunk.

Office block catches fire

There was a fire at an office building in Bangkok on May 11. It happened at Le Concorde Office Tower on Ratchadaphisek Road. The fire started in a storage room. Two people were injured in the fire.
