Letter of the week

WEATHER WORRIES

I always hear the news about the drought in northern Thailand these days. Farmers cannot grow rice well because there is no rain and no water for irrigation. My hometown of Chiang Mai also has the same crisis. Nobody wants their crops to die, but they have no options.

But every cloud has a silver lining. His Majesty the King's artificial rain project has been done in the area and it began to rain around my hometown. The farmers can grow their crops and there is sufficient water for their farming. I hope that the crops will survive and grow while there is enough water.

Ging,
Chiang Mai

Drought seems to be a recurring problem in Thailand and many other parts of the world, Ging. Unfortunately humans have done a lot of damage to the environment everywhere, and in many places annual flooding and drought are the results. Hopefully the farmers in Thailand will get enough rain to see them through this season. — Editor

ALL SOLD OUT

My favourite band is having a concert in Bangkok but I didn’t get a ticket in time. They are quite popular and play really good music. All my friends managed to get tickets but now they have sold out and nobody I know has an extra one.

I hope that next time they come I will be able to purchase a ticket in time. For now I will just have to listen to their music online.

Ear Sriwanat,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter, Ear. It's a shame you missed out on seeing your favourite band, but hopefully they'll be back again some time in the future. Seeing a good band perform live is definitely one of the most fun and memorable things you can do. It's just a shame that sometimes ticket prices can be quite expensive for international performers. — Editor

UNIFORM THINKING

My school has a very strict dress code. We are not allowed to wear certain things. For example, very bright colours are banned, as are short trousers or skirts. I find this quite annoying because Thailand is extremely hot most of the year and having to wear long trousers and skirts is a pain! But I prefer to wear a uniform, even though they are often quite expensive and many of my friends hate wearing uniforms.

Nat Chayakul,
Bangkok

I was never a fan of school uniforms myself, Nat, but some students don't seem to mind them. Anyway, one of the compensations of growing up and having to live in the adult world is that usually you can pretty much wear whatever you want. So hang in there — your school days will be done before you know it! — Editor
