January 19

In 1978, the last original German-made Volkswagen Beetle rolls off the assembly line at the VW plant in Emden. The Beetle continues to be manufactured in Latin America until 2003.

In 1977, snow falls in the US city of Miami, Florida. It is the only time in the history of the city that snowfall has occurred.

In 1964, Meet The Beatles, The Beatles' first official US release, hits stores.

In 1841, the island of Hong Kong is ceded to Great Britain. It returns to Chinese control in July 1997.

Happy Birthday to American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power (1972).

In 1793, during the French Revolution, King Louis XVI is convicted of treason and executed by guillotine.

In 1984, the Apple Macintosh, the first consumer computer to popularise the computer mouse, is introduced to the public via a television commercial.

In 2003, scientists in China report that they have discovered the fossilised remains of a dinosaur with four feathered wings.

In 1973, US President Richard Nixon announces that a peace accord has been reached to end the Vietnam War.

Today is the last day at Kathmandu Gallery on Pan Road in Silom to see The Last Chinatown, an exhibition by Austin Bush who spent a year photographing the Chinese community in Yaowarat. The gallery is open daily from 11 am to 7 pm. For more information, call 02 234 6700.
