Letter of the week

BUILDING BUILDINGS

There seems to be so much building in Bangkok these days. On every spare block of land in the city, it seems like somebody is building a big new condo or a huge shopping mall. I just wonder of there are enough people to live and shop in all these places! Maybe it would be better if they built some more parks instead.

Bing,
via email

I know how you feel, Bing. Everywhere you look in the City of Angels there's a new high-rise going up. There are so many condos, malls and other skyscrapers being built that it's little wonder the city is sinking. I suppose that's the price we pay for continual population growth. I guess all these building projects at least provide some short-term employment opportunities. But as you say, some more parks would be nice! — Editor

FAMOUS FACES

My name is Jane Lamlukka and I’m studying in Matayom 5. I’ve been reading your magazine since I was in Matayom 1 and I never get tired of it. I love listening to music, and your magazine always has my favourite celebrities on the cover.

As I get older, I notice that there are so many celebrities, both actors and singers, that have plastic surgery nowadays. Honestly, I just don’t get why celebrities want to do that kind of thing to their already beautiful faces. I know it’s a trend that came from other countries. Cosmetic surgery is very popular in South Korea, but I still wonder why. I’m pretty sure that I’ll never ever do this kind of thing.

Jane Lamlukka,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter and for continuing to read Student Weekly, Jane! I don't really understand why so many people get unnecessary cosmetic surgery either. Personally, I would avoid going under the knife at all cost unless it was absolutely essential for my survival or well-being. — Editor

NICE ICE

Recently I visited a theme park called Snow Town in a Bangkok shopping mall near Ekamai. It's set up like a small Japanese village, with a big area in the middle full of artificial snow for people to play in. Around the edge are many different Japanese restaurants.

It was a fun way to escape from the heat because even if you don't play in the snow, the air con in the park is super cold like winter. I think it's a fun place for parents to take their kids on a hot day!

Tum Jirawat,
Bangkok

That sounds like a pretty fun and slightly surreal theme park, Tum. I guess there's not much chance of anybody being able to experience snow in Thailand, so getting a taste of icy cold comfort in a Bangkok shopping mall sounds like a fair substitute. — Editor
