The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a diverse nation with a population of more than 60 million people. As neighbours, Myanmar and Thailand share certain similarities in culture, traditions and lifestyles. With plentiful natural resources and numerous historical attractions, Myanmar is becoming a popular tourist destination.

For Freeze Frame this week, SW takes a look at some of the sights in the cities of Yangon, Bago and Nay Pyi Taw.

The Kanbawzathadi Palace in Bago was built in 1556. After being damaged by a fire, the ancient palace was refurbished and reconstructed in 1992.

Yangon’s Chinatown is a lively place where visitors can find many different types of food.

Those who love to see rare white elephants and scenic views are encouraged to visit Nay Pyi Taw.

Situated inside Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon, the country’s largest reclining Buddha image is 65 metres in length.

The dazzling Uppatasanti Pagoda in Nay Pyu Taw houses four sacred Buddha images.

Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is one of Myanmar’s most famous landmarks. The pagoda is believed to have existed for more than 2,600 years.

Relics of Lord Buddha are enshrined at Botataung Pagoda in downtown Yangon, where locals and pilgrims gather to worship and pray for success and prosperity.
