Letter of the week

WORDY WINNER

Hi! I noticed that for several weeks you haven't been printing the winner's names for scrabble or crossword anymore. I usually try to win to learn new vocabulary from those games. Once I even won a pencil, and I felt so proud whenever I used it.

I like to attempt something that is difficult for me because it sharpens my brain. I'll keep following these games and solutions to get more knowledge.

Pornchai Amnuaychailert,
Bangkok

Thanks for your letter, Pornchai, and I'm really glad you enjoy our scrabble and crossword puzzles. They can be challenging but, as you say, they're a fun way to learn new vocabulary and a little bit of general knowledge. As you noticed, we no longer publish the names of winners for these games. But it's great to know that there are people out there who are still happy to work on the puzzles for fun and a little edutainment. — Editor

CLEAN DREAM

A few days ago, officials prepared to declare new rules about cleanliness on the pathways to stop people in Bangkok from spitting on the ground, littering or leaving rubbish around. If anybody breaks these rules, they will be fined or sent to jail.

I actually agree with these rules, because when I walk on the footpath, I have to be careful to avoid dirt that shouldn’t be on the streets of a capital city like Bangkok. Bangkok is a destination for tourists from around the world, so it’s a good idea to have rules to keep the streets clean.

Toffee,
Ratchaburi

Thanks for your letter, Toffee. Sometimes in a sprawling, over-crowded city like Bangkok, it can be hard to keep the streets clean. It would certainly help if so many people didn't mindlessly drop their rubbish on the footpaths every day. If these new rules can be enforced, maybe walking the streets of Bangkok won't be such a harrowing experience! — Editor

HOT TOPIC

Hi Student Weekly! The weather in Thailand has been so hot lately. I know that it's always hot during the summertime, but it seems even hotter than usual this summer, especially where I live in Bangkok. Even though rain and storms can be annoying sometimes, I'm actually really looking forward to rainy season this year because at least it will cool everything down a little bit. I just hope it doesn't flood this year!

Film Sirijan,
Bangkok

Hi Film. You're right, it does seem to have been a particularly hot summer this year here in the Land of Smiles. In the early hours of this morning I was woken by a massive thunder storm, so I guess rainy season has pretty much arrived. As for flooding, the soi just outside the Bangkok Post office was already totally flooded this morning, so I guess we have plenty more of that to look forward to over the coming months! — Editor
