Seal bares his soul

The British soul and R&B singer-songwriter Seal found fame with his hit single “Kiss From a Rose,” from the soundtrack to 1995’s Batman Forever. After being quiet since his last album Soul 2 in 2011, Seal is back with his mellow new record, 7.

Album opener is the ballad “Daylight Saving,” about daylight helping to keep him warm when he’s not with his lover. Next is a similarly laid-back and romantic "Every Time I'm With You," with piano, acoustic guitar and violins. Seal’s vocals and catchy chorus make this song a sweet pleasure. "Life On The Dancefloor" and “Padded Cell” have a more dancefloor feel but are still quite slow.

The best song is "Do You Ever," with its sad lyrics about an ex-girlfriend. "Redzone Killer" is a bit faster and the beat has a nice swing, and the poignant track "Half a Heart" is perfect for anybody going through a heartbreak.

Overall, this is an album of slow R&B with moods of love, happiness and hurt. If you enjoy Seal’s distinctive voice and the 90s vibes, 7 will make you happy.—SK
