OBEC wants old system back

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) is studying whether it should revive the old system of making students who fail crucial tests repeat their classes rather than giving them the chance to re-sit and move on to the next academic year at the same time as their peers, officials said on December 2.

Education Minister Dapong Ratanasuwan has asked OBEC secretary-general Karoon Sakulpradit to weigh the pros and cons of restoring the old system in primary and secondary schools, as he believes the current system cannot ensure educational quality.

Bidding for rail lines to begin

The state plans to open bidding for the construction of four electric railways next year, officials said.

The Orange Line (Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri), the Pink Line (Kae Rai to Min Buri), and the Yellow Line (Lat Phrao to Samrong) are the first three routes to go to bidding in the first half of 2016, while that of the extended Purple Line (Tao Pun to Rat Burana) is expected by the end of the year, according to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand.

"We will see significant progress in these rail projects next year," Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said on December 2.
