Did you know

Note spent a year in Germany as an exchange student.

Classic old songs being covered by young stars has become a trend in the Thai music industry in recent times. One example is the smash hit song “Cho Malee (My Girl),” originally sung by the group Mr. Team and recently remade for the compilation album, Frontage Freeform.

The Star 7 singer Note Panayanggool, 21, and a professional photographer Kanachai Bencharongkul (Kit), 25, were already fans of Mr. Team, so they were happy to record “My Girl” as a fun dance song. The video for the song, with its depiction of an attractive woman at a fancy party, is already a hit on YouTube.

Student Weekly recently met up with Kit and Note at the Frontage label office. The duo told us about the recording of their single and about what they like to do during their free time.

Student Weekly: Do you enjoy listening to cover versions of classic songs?

Note: Yes. I listen to cover songs because they tell the same story as the original version, but it comes from a different singer with a new point of view.

Kit: I like hearing a guy cover a song that was originally sung by a woman. It changes the perspective and I can relate to it more.

Student Weekly: Kit, how did you become involved with this single?

Kit: I took photographs for the Frontage label. When there was a birthday party for Ake, the executive of the label, I sang karaoke. Ake liked my singing and asked me to record a demo. That was almost a year ago.

Student Weekly: What was it like for you two working together?

Kit: I asked the producer if I could sing with Note because I like the way she performs, and she didn’t disappoint me at all. Note also had a lot of ideas during the recording.

Note: Kit is easy-going. During the recording, I helped him to arrange his vocal part. He has a cool, unique voice.

Student Weekly: Did you have any trouble filming the music video?

Kit: No. I didn’t have to do any emotional scenes!

Note: It was difficult for me because I had to be a sexy, attractive woman who was being chased by a guy. The character was very different from me. [Laughs.] During the filming, I had to close my eyes and pretend that I was a beautiful actress like Ploy Chermarn or Mai Davika. It was challenging, but I was very happy to work on it.

Student Weekly: What do you like to do to when you want to feel free?

Note: I’m very independent and spontaneous. If I want to go abroad tomorrow, I’ll just go. In the future, I want to be a freelance worker. I don’t want to have a contract or work for anybody. I’ll work on different projects and finish them one at a time.

Kit: I feel the same. That’s why I work as a freelance photographer. I always have itchy feet, and I enjoy extreme sports. I’ve travelled around and tried bungee jumping and parachuting.

Student Weekly: Where did you try bungee jumping?

Kit: At Macau Tower. It’s the world’s highest place for bungee jumping. We had to take a glass elevator to the top and I was amazed how high up we were. Bungee jumping was more exciting than parachuting. After I came down from the tower, I wanted to do it again!

Student Weekly: Since you travel a lot, where is your favourite place?

Kit: I recently visited Hawaii and I liked it a lot. I like surfing and it was a great place to surf. I stayed next to the beach. The weather was nice and I went surfing every day for a week.

Student Weekly: Note, is it true that you like to cook Indian food?

Note: I love cooking. I’m interested in Indian food because it has a lot of detail. The spices they use are nice and powerful.

Student Weekly: Note, can you tell us about your character in the upcoming TV drama, Roi Lay Sa-ne Rai [Lethal Charm]?

Note: I play Yim, who is the best friend of the lead female character. Yim has a crush on Tor, played by Chin Chinawut, but Tor falls for her best friend. Yim isn’t a pushover, so in that way she’s similar to me.

Student Weekly: Why should listeners download your single legally?

Note: We worked hard on the song. If you download the single legally, you will get a good quality recording so that you can hear the details of the song clearly. The whole album will be available for download soon, and you’ll get both the songs and the music videos.
