Vendors to be moved

Street vendors will be cleared from sidewalks in front of Siriraj Hospital from October 8, Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on October 5.

Speaking after paying respects to the Prince Mahidol statue at Siriraj Hospital, MR Sukhumbhand insisted the temporary areas in which street vendors were permitted on the footpath next to the hospital will be removed.

Street vendors would also be removed from footpaths opposite the hospital when a suitable time arises, as the city steps up its campaign to clear walkways for pedestrians.

Sacks of drugs found

Officials seized 330 kilogrammes of marijuana in Nakhon Phanom on October 5. A combined team of police and naval officers seized the marijuana from a port close to the Mekong River, officials said on October 5.

Police said they spotted a group of people who were loading sacks from a long-tailed boat to a wharf close to the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom’s Tha Uthen district. When the police approached, the men fled. Police said they found nine sacks, labeled in Vietnamese, containing the marijuana.

The value of the drugs is estimated at 5 million baht, police said.

Family tragedy

Boat capsizes in Narathiwat

A Malaysian woman drowned and her two children were missing. The long-tailed boat they were travelling in capsized. It happened on October 4. The accident was on the Sungai Kolok River in Narathiwat.
