Did you know

One Direction are the first group ever to have their first four albums debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Local pop fans were excited recently when the world’s current number one boy band, One Direction, performed live in Bangkok. More than 20,000 fans thronged to Rajamangala National Stadium on March 14 for the event.

The concert was part of One Direction’s On the Road Again Tour, which included visits to Australia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa and the UAE.

The concert was probably the only chance that Thai fans will get to see all five original members of the group perform, since Zayn Malik officially announced his departure from One Direction on March 25, a week before the tour ended.

Student Weekly was lucky enough to make it along to the once in a lifetime concert.

DJ DANCE

For the 25-minute opening act, Thailand’s celebrated DJ Ono, from radio station MET107, played a series of remixes of smash hits, which included “Single Ladies” by Beyoncé, “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, “We Are Young” by Fun, “Boom Clap” by Charli XCX and “Turn Up the Love” by Far East Movement.

The audience enjoyed DJ Ono’s set, singing and dancing along to his cool remixes.

STEALING THE SHOW

During the first half of the concert, the five members of One Direction — Niall Horan, 21, Liam Payne, 21, Harry Styles, 21, Louis Tomlinson, 23, and Zayn Malik, 22 — performed with a lot of energy. The first two songs, “Clouds” and “Steal My Girl,” featured on their latest album, Four, gave the fans packed in the stadium a big thrill.

“This is our first time in Thailand. We love it,” Liam said, before asking the crowd if they enjoyed the album, Four.

GUITAR MAN

While the other members of the group focused on singing and dancing, Niall enjoyed playing guitar onstage. He even played some nice acoustic guitar while performing the song, “Ready to Run.”

HAPPY HIGHLIGHTS

A highlight of the concert was the group’s acoustic performance of “Little Things.” The guys all sat down to sing the song, while Niall played guitar.

“I want to say a massive thank you,” Zayn Malik said before introducing the song, “Little Things.”

There was a special surprise for any fans that happened to be celebrating their birthday on the day of the concert when One Direction sang “Happy Birthday.”

The guys also spent some time reading the signs and card messages that their fans carried to the concert. One memorable message read, “Point your direction in our direction!”

BEST SONGS

After performing about 20 songs in a row, One Direction ended their concert with the hits “You & I,” “Little White Lies” and “Best Song Ever.” The happy crowd sang along loudly to all three songs.
