The capital of Spain is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations. Home to 6.5 million people, the city is full of natural resources, tourist attractions and historical sites.

This week SW explores some of Madrid’s best-known tourist destinations.

Built more than 2,000 years ago, the Temple of Debod in central Madrid has been open to the public since 1972. It is one of the oldest historical sites in Spain.

Opened in September 1992, the Queen Sofia Museum, or the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, is located in central Madrid. The museum displays a great number of contemporary artworks and hosts regular temporary exhibitions as well.

San Miguel Market offers you a variety of typical foods, including cheeses, olives, Iberian ham, Rioja wine and nougat.

The Royal Palace of Madrid, or the Palacio Real de Madrid, is one of the largest palaces in Europe, covering a total area of 135,000 square metres. The palace is currently used for state ceremonies.

The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, or the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, welcomes huge numbers of soccer fans each year. Inside the stadium is the Heritage Centre, where visitors can see exhibitions on remarkable victories and biographies of some of the world’s most famous football players.
