FATAL FALL

Elephant falls to death

A female elephant died after falling off a hill in Muang district of Trang province on January 5. The 50-year-old elephant weighing more than 3 tonnes was found dead in a forest in Nam Phut sub-district.

The animal fell 20m to the ground. Owner Malee Cheoychit, 54, said she took the jumbo and tied the animal to a tree on the hill where the elephant could eat before she returned home. About an hour later, she heard the loud sound of a heavy object falling. She then found the elephant dead.

Northeast’s temperature getting colder

The temperature has dipped again in the upper northeast, the weather bureau said on January 4. The cooler weather is caused by a high pressure trough in China.

The temperature in the upper Northeast dropped to between 1C to 2C with early morning fog. In Si Sa Ket, the cold spell has doubled the number of people seeking medical treatment for respiratory illnesses at the province's main hospital.

The number of patients suffering from respiratory problems a day at Si Sa Ket Hospital has increased from 200 to 500.

Monks’ rooms on fire

A fire destroyed quarters at a temple. It happened on January 5. The incident took place at Suwannaram Temple in Bangkok Noi district of Bangkok. The blaze damaged several Buddha images. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
