Did you know

Ji Sub sang “The Sound of Memory” for the movie Road No1 in 2010.

Versatile actor So Ji Sub has been praised for his natural performances since he starred in the high-rating TV melodrama, I'm Sorry, I Love You in 2004. Ji Sub won several awards for that series, including top actor at the KBS Drama Awards.

Last year, the 36-year-old actor impressed viewers who were used to his serious roles by starring on the smash hit horror comedy series, Master’s Sun, a show that made Ji Sub an even bigger star throughout Asia.

Aside from acting, the Korean heart-throb has a passion for music. He recently released his hip-hop album 18 Years, the title track of which was written by Ji Sub himself.

FUN WITH FANS

On July 26, Ji Sub held his So Ji Sub 1st Asia Tour Let’s Have Fun in Thailand fan meeting at Central Ladprao’s Bangkok Convention Center.

The event was divided into two parts. During the first session, the actor was interviewed by an MC and answered questions from fans. At the end of the first session, the crowd went crazy when Ji Sub put a ring on a fan’s finger and hugged her.

HIP-HOP PARTY

The second part of the fan meeting featured a musical performance. Ji Sub collaborated with Korean hip-hop group Soul Dive for an hour of music. The songs performed included “18 Years,” “Boy Go” and “You Are in My Fantasy” from the star’s new album.

The actor was a surprisingly cool rapper, who along with Soul Dive, interacted well with the fans and kept the audience’s energy level high. The event ended memorably with Ji Sub giving everybody a high five.

JI SUB SPEAKS

The day before the fan meeting, Ji Sub met up with fans and the press at the Aetas Lumpini Hotel for an interview. Here is some of what the star had to say.

Question: How do you feel about visiting Thailand again?

Ji Sub: I’m excited right now. I feel thankful that my fans gave me the opportunity to hold this meeting. In 2012, I was in Thailand for the Hua Hin International Film Festival, and I was here on vacation for last two months. Despite the hot weather, Thailand makes me feel happy and relaxed.

Question: What kinds of Thai food would you like to try?

Ji Sub: I have Thai food often when I’m in Korea. I’ve tried fried rice, stir-fried morning glory and tom yum goong. I’d like to make Korean salted soya beans for my fans, but unfortunately it stinks!

Question: Did anything worry you while filming Master’s Sun?

Ji Sub: I was initially worried because I hadn’t worked on a TV comedy series for a long time. I wondered whether or not my fans would enjoy the series. But after receiving some great feedback, I felt encouraged to work well.

Question: After being an actor for 18 years, is there still a particular type of role you’d like to try?

Ji Sub: An actor’s job is to play various kinds of roles. I don’t want specify what kind of character I’d like to play. I just want to act more and try different types of characters.

Question: How did you feel about having to high five with more than 6,000 fans at your last fan meeting?

Ji Sub: I wanted my fans to be happy because we finally got to meet. When I felt tired, I thought about all my happy fans and that gave me energy to keep going.

Question: How did you become interested in making music?

Ji Sub: I’m not good at singing, but I enjoy it, and I also write lyrics. I want to write my own songs and sing for my fans. If my fans enjoy listening to my music, it would to great for me.

Question: Which of your songs do you think stands out the most?

Ji Sub: “Boy Go.” We all have dreams when we’re young. This song is about an adult thinking about his childhood dreams.

Question: Do you ever worry about being away from your dog so often?

Ji Sub: I don’t have to worry much because there’s always somebody at the office to take care of the dog. Dogs can get lonely, so I never leave him alone.

Question: When you meet a woman, what do you notice first about her?

Ji Sub: When I was younger, I always noticed a woman’s face first. But now that I’m older, I consider her mind more.

Question: Do you feel uncomfortable about being recognised and followed by fans even while travelling in other countries?

Ji Sub: Not at all. I’m fine with fans following me around. If I had no fans, I wouldn’t be here. But some fans follow me by car and jump out of the vehicle to approach me. That can be dangerous, so please don’t do that!
