Officials recently reported that Thailand will host the 2015 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools.

Read the following story from the Bangkok Post to learn more about this exciting competition.

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) will host the 2015 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary Schools, also known as IMSO 2015, from November 1 to 7 in Pathum Thani province.

WORD-CLASS CONTEST

More than 600 students from 20 countries are expected to compete in the event.

"This international contest will be a great experience for Thai students,” OBEC secretary-genera Karoon Sakulpradit said. "They will have a chance to compare and test their skills against many talented students from other countries.”

JUNIOR CHAMPIONS

Karoon added that the competitors are grade 5 or 6 students under the age of 13. Each country can send 12 students — six students for each subject.

Students are competing for gold, silver and bronze medals, and the one who achieves the highest score in the competition will receive a trophy, Karoon said.

DEVELOPING MINDS

Karoon said the goal of the contest is to raise enthusiasm for science and mathematics, especially among primary school students, and allow them to develop their abilities in both subjects.

The OBEC chief said Thai students usually become less interested in mathematics and science as they get older, so state agencies need to encourage them at a young age to maintain their enthusiasm.

"We hope this contest will provide Thai students with positive role models to follow," Karoon said.
