Did you know

Great Expectations is based on the 1861 novel of the same name by Charles Dickens.

Romantic movies help to brighten many people’s lives, and they are especially popular when Valentine’s Day comes around each year. Since February 14 is almost upon us, many couples and even singles with broken hearts will be looking for a romantic classic to watch.

With that in mind, Student Weekly asked some local celebrities to tell us about some of their favourite romantic movies. Grab yourself to some chocolate or popcorn and have a happy Valentine’s Day!

500 Days of Summer (2009)

Directed by Marc Webb

“I pick 500 Days of Summer as my favourite romantic movie. Unlike other movies that end either sadly or happily, 500 Days of Summer ends in the middle of the story. It’s refreshing to see something different.”

Kod Rak Aeng Loei (Loveaholic) (2006)

Directed by Ping Lumpraploeng

“My favourite romantic movie is the Thai drama, Kod Rak Aeng Loei [Loveaholic]. The movie is about a guy who lost his wife and is having trouble moving on. It was the first film that made me cry. I don’t have much experience with love, but when I saw this movie I felt very emotional. It’s a really sad film.”

Goonshipas Peonpaweevorakul (Mint),
20, singer with Tiny-G

Her (2013)

Directed by Spike Jonze

“This is an eccentric movie that explores romance and 21st century technology. It’s about a guy whose marriage fails, and who then falls in love with his operating system, which can communicate with him on any issue. The film has a really lonely atmosphere, which is rare for a romantic movie.”

Sweet and Lowdown (1999)

Directed by Woody Allen

“I was at a café with my girlfriend one day when I read an article about Woody Allen’s films in a magazine. Then later I found this movie.

“Sweet and Lowdown is a romantic movie about the life of a jazz musician, which made me really want to watch it. Sean Penn stars in the film and he’s brilliant. The story is very touching and the soundtrack is great. I can’t recommend this film enough!”

Sanpawit Soikum (Nat),
25, guitarist with Summer Dress

Great Expectations (1998)

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron

“I’m not quite sure if this counts as a romantic movie. I was in my last year at university when I first saw Great Expectations. I really like this movie because it made me realise that romantic love is not necessary for a happy ending. The film explores many emotions, including love, hate and friendship.”

Pitiya Anantaprut (Bee),
26, model and photographer

Love Actually (2003)

Directed by Richard Curtis

“I like Love Actually, which tells romantic stories set during the Christmas season. There are stories of both happy couples and people with broken hearts. When I watched this movie, I kept crossing my fingers and hoping that each couple’s relationship would work out well.”
