Beggar found with cash

Local officials rounding up beggars in central Chai Nat were surprised to find a handicapped Chinese beggar who had more than 20,000 baht in his shoulder bag on January 27.

As part of a campaign against begging, social development and human security staff and local police went to a market in Muang Chai Nat municipality where they found 39-year-old Chinese beggar Xu Baosong, who has deformed hands.

Xu is from Henan province, China. While searching Xu, police found money in his shoulder bag totalling 21,540 baht. Officials then took Xu to immigration police for repatriation to China.


Teachers needed

OVEC asks for money

The Office of Vocational Education Commission (OVEC) wants money to hire almost 20,000 state teachers as a solution to the nationwide shortage, officials reported on January 28.

The OVEC subcommittee on the Civil Service Commission recently agreed to forward a proposal to the cabinet requesting 14,927 teachers and 4,759 teaching assistants.

OVEC secretary-general Chaiyapruek Serirak said vocational colleges across the country have been understaffed for more than 20 years, especially the 132 newly-established institutions and colleges of agriculture and technology.

Fatal crash

Three die in accident

Three people were killed in a pickup truck crash. Two others were injured. It happened in Chiang Mai on January 31. The truck plunged into a gully and overturned.
