The pop music business nowadays is highly competitive, with new groups emerging almost every day. Their songs take turns rising and falling on the charts with lightning speed, and artists that are here today are often gone tomorrow. Only those bands with the talent to continue producing hit songs can stay alive. The same rules apply for G-Twenty, the all-girl pop group that has managed to survive despite all obstacles, including the departure of four of the group’s original members.

In 2013, G-Twenty recruited five new members, bringing the group’s current line-up to seven members. They include 25-year-old group leader Pacharawan Vedrukchit (Ticha), 20-year-old Panshalie Suriyaprapat (Pear), 20-year-old Baramita Sakornchan (Mint), 23-year-old Kannaporn Iamwibun (Gift), 21-year-old Oravee Luangviboonporn (Sugus), 19-year-old Chanisa Egawarin (Nisa), and 22-year-old Patcharin Chetsakulvichit (Patcy).

G-Twenty recently released its latest single, “Mai Pood Gor Dai-yin (Unspoken Word)”, which marks a move away from the dance-pop sound that defined their debut album toward more of a soul and R&B feel.

Student Weekly recently caught up with the seven beautiful members of G-Twenty to talk about their new music and line-up.

Student Weekly: There are some obvious changes to G-Twenty’s line-up. Can you guys talk about that?

Ticha: Yes, after the tour for our last album, some G-Twenty members left the band to do their own things — some went back to finish university and some decided to pursue acting careers. Pear and I are both original members, and we decided to carry on, keeping the name G-Twenty.

Pear: Now we have new friends — Mint, Sugus, Gift, Nisa and Patcy – joining as new members. We found them through our label Mono Music, and they are very good singers and dancers. It’s really fun working together and we are getting along very well.

Student Weekly: Mint, is it true that you were an avid fan of G-Twenty before joining the group?

Mint: Absolutely! I’ve been the group’s biggest fan ever since they released their first single a few years ago. I entered the Gossip Girl 2010 contest and auditioned to be in Mono Music because I wanted to be like G-Twenty. It’s like a dream to think that I’m now part of the team.

Pear: We all know that because even now she keeps asking everyone in the band, “Am I really in G-Twenty now?” [laughs].

Student Weekly: Is it easier or harder to work as a seven-member group?

Ticha: We were a five-member band before, so of course it’s quite different now. But since we are all good friends, it’s easy to open up to each other when we have problems. I also think that the more people we have in the group, the stronger we can be.

Student Weekly: Your latest single, “Unspoken Word,” has a more mature vibe than the group’s previous music. Can you tell us more about that?

Ticha: Yes, “Unspoken Word” is a song in which we wanted to make some changes to our style. We call the style retro soul. We used a real band and horn sections to record the song rather than electronic and dance music, which was how we did it on our last album.

Pear: The melody and its lyrics are more accessible than before too. We hope that our old fans will love the new song as much as we do.

Student Weekly: For some of you, it was your first time recording in a studio. How did your first recording experience go?

Pear: It took us almost three months in the studio to finish recording the song.

Sugus: It was really hard. We all practiced hard before the recording sessions, but I guess there was something about the recording studio’s atmosphere that scared us [laughs]. We got too nervous.

Mint: I remember that Gift was begging Pear to accompany her in the studio when she had to sing her part [laughs].

Student Weekly: Ticha, besides being the band leader, you also work as a TV host for True Music Channel. Can you talk about that?

Ticha: Since I’m the oldest, and don’t need to go to school like the rest of the group, I have more opportunities to try different things. Hosting a TV show has been fun. I’ve had a chance to interview artists, actors and other interesting people, which has been really good for my career.

Student Weekly: Finally, what’s the next step for G-Twenty?

Ticha: We are planning to release new song soon. But in the meantime, we hope you guys enjoy our first single “Unspoken Word” and don’t forget to watch the music video too. It’s really beautiful. There will also be more concerts in 2014, and we hope our fans will be there to support us.
