Jean shows her teen spirit

Music Bugs is a record label renowned for developing new rock bands that go on to become big names like Bodyslam, Labanoon and Basher. The label recently expanded its range into the lucrative bubblegum-pop market, releasing Teen Spirit, a compilation that features five young upcoming artists.

One of the standout songs on Teen Spirit is Khon Rak Sat (Animal Lover) by 17-year-old model Klaokaew Sinteppadon (Jean). After the success of that track, Jean got the green light to make her solo album, Girl Talk.

Though Jean has had plenty of experience acting in TV commercials, being a pop star is a whole new bag. For Girl Talk she had some expert guidance from producers Nus Attapol and Home Siwapon, both guitarists from Basher.

Jean recently sat down with Student Weekly for a chat about her work on Girl Talk. Shes not used to giving interviews, but as a professional model, Jeans keen and comfortable in front of the camera.

Student Weekly: How did you meet Nus Attapol and Home Siwapon?

• Did you know •
Jean is afraid of basketballs because she thinks that the noise they make is frightening.

Jean: I ran into Nus at RCA while I was shooting a TV commercial there.

He saw me and asked if I was interested in being a singer. I thought it was a rare opportunity, so I sent him a demo.

Student Weekly: What are the songs on Girl Talk about?

Jean: The album is all about stuff that girls talk about when they get together.

The song Kullasattree [Lady] comes from my experience. My friend saw a cute guy and wanted to approach him, but I told her that she should take it easy.

Student Weekly: Kullasattree is an old word that young people rarely use. Did you intend to use an old-fashioned title for the song?

Jean: Yes. We hardly ever hear that word anymore, so its unusual and cool. I dont think that the idea is out of date. Every girl should have a ladylike quality.

Student Weekly: What did your mother teach you about being a lady?

Jean: She told me that girls and guys shouldnt touch each other and that girls shouldnt reveal their personnel information to a guy.

Student Weekly: What did you learn from Nus and Home?

Jean: I didnt know much about different music genres. Nus and Home explained to me the difference between house music and funk.

The song Khon Rak Sat has a house feel, while Khon Mai Narak [Not a Cute Girl] is more like funk.

Student Weekly: Which was the most difficult song to record?

Jean:Kham Tam [Question], because its a rock song. I had to use a lot of power to make my voice stand out from the music.

Student Weekly: The song Khon Mai Narak is about a boy hitting on a girl because shes cute. Are you concerned about appearances?

Jean: Appearance isnt the most important thing for me. Im more concerned about behaviour. You need to have proper understanding with somebody to get along.

Student Weekly: How do you deal with being a student and working at the same time?

Jean: I have to pay more attention during class. If I dont have time to study before an exam, I can still remember what the teacher said.

Student Weekly: What makes Girl Talk different from other pop albums?

Jean: Its a pop record with house, R&B and funk flavours, so its an interesting album. I hope everybody listens to it!
