Letter of the week

GOOD ADVICE

My nickname is Koon, and Im 15 years old. Im in Matayom 3, and I want to change schools for Matayom 4.

At first I wasnt sure what I wanted to study. I thought about this for a very long time.

One day my father asked me what subject I wanted to study. I told him that I like math and English, but I dont know what I want to do in life.

My father said that if I like math and English, then I should have self-confidence and not worry. He said that if I pay attention in class and Im not lazy about learning and reviewing subjects, then I will get good marks.

So now I know that I want to learn math and English. I want to say thank you to my father for the good advice he gave me.

Niramon Kitikola, Songkhla

Its really nice to get a letter like yours, Koon. Its great to hear about parents who are so supportive and full of good advice. With a dad like yours, youre sure to do great. Editor

GREEN SCENE

My nickname is Guy. I am a member of an organisation that is taking care of pollution and the environment. I want everyone to be concerned and to help stop the problem of global warming.

This problem has existed since humans first discovered fire and started to use it globally. At first the problem was not too big and could be stopped, but now it cant. It is now one of the worlds biggest problems.

There are more and more people who are concerned about this problem now. As a result, more green technology is being invented and manufactured. But at the moment, many of these products are still too expensive for most people to buy and use.

I hope that soon these products will be cheaper and more widely used so that this problem can be solved in the near future.

Chanon Pongpanich, Hat Yai

Youre right, Guy. Global warming is a huge problem facing humanity. We will all continue to be impacted by it for a very long time. At this point, its probably too late to make things better any time soon. What were going to have to do on a global scale is figure out how to live with the problems weve created and how we can work to make sure that we dont make things worse. Maybe that way the Earth will be able to heal, and future generations will have a better world to live in. Editor

GOING INTER

My nickname is Soft. Im in Matayom 6 at Phimai Witthaya School. I like to learn English very much.

Ive been reading Student Weekly since last year, and I like it a lot. I think its a great way to increase and improve my English skills.

Im preparing for my entrance examination. I would like to study at an international university in Thailand because I think it would be very interesting. Accordingly, I read SW and Bangkok Post as much as I can.

If I go to an international university, will I understand the students when they speak?

Natthapong Sributh, Nakhon Ratchasima

Its possible that you may have trouble understanding some of your fellow students, Soft. From personal experience I can tell you that I have sometimes had trouble understanding other English speakers and Im from the US. Things like unfamiliar accents, speech patterns and slang can make communication a challenge. All you have to do is keep listening and not be shy about asking people to repeat things you didnt understand. Above all, enjoy the challenges and rewards of meeting and understanding new people. Good luck. Editor
