The Phadung Krung Kasem canal in Bangkok has recently been revived to be one of the city’s important tourist destinations and transportation routes.

For this week’s Freeze Frame, SW explores the sights and attractions along the canal.

The Thewes Palace was established under the orders of King Rama V and given as a present of one of his sons, Prince Kitiyakara Woralak, in 1896.

Thewarat Kunchorn Temple was built during the Ayutthaya period. Buddhists are encouraged to worship at the Phra Phuttadevaraj Patimakorn Buddha image, which is made of metal and covered with gold lacquer.

Thewarat Market is situated next to Wat Thewarat Kunchorn. The big market is famed for the wholesale and retail trade of rice, fresh and dried food, chilli paste and many other local products.

Samananam Borihan Temple was constructed in the Chinese and Vietnamese style during the reign of King Rama V. The temple’s hall houses a portrait of Vietnamese emperor Gia Long.

Somanas Ratchaworawihan Temple was commissioned by King Rama IV in 1853. The interior walls of the ordination hall feature mural paintings of various mediation methods of Buddhist monks.

The Phadung Krung Kasem canal is located in Bangkok’s Thewes’s district. Along the canal are trading communities, rice mills, ice factories and warehouses.
