The Embassy of Nepal and Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Thailand will hold the Nepal Festival and Earthquake Memorial event in Bangkok to mark the first anniversary of the massive quake on 25 April last year, which took more than 9,000 lives and damaged 900,000 houses and schools.

FESTIVAL THANKS

The festival will be held on April 21-25 at CentralWorld. It will showcase Nepali products, food and music along with tourist destinations in Nepal.

The NRNA's president, Khagendra Raj Dhakal, said the main objectives of the event are to promote bilateral tourism, trade and cultural understanding between the two countries.

At the same time, Nepal will also use this occasion to express its sincere thanks to Thailand for its generous support for the rescue of, and relief to, earthquake victims, he said.

"Thailand has rendered assistance and full support in many aspects to Nepal during the tragic earthquake time such as sending rescue and medical teams for rehabilitation, cooperation in the restoration of historical sites, and providing necessity humanitarian medical supplies.

"We can say Thailand is our true friend, so we want to organise this event to thank the Thai people and boost commercial cooperation between us to new heights," Khagendra said.

REBUILDING BUILDINGS

Khagendra went on to say that although Nepal is now slowly returning to normal, the country still has a long way to go to rebuild the old prosperous Nepal as many survivors are still struggling without electricity and basic services in some areas.

"We expect thousands of Nepal-lovers in Thailand to visit the festival to buy package tours and Nepali products at special prices," he said.

In addition, the NRNA will donate part of the proceeds from the event to a housing project in Nepal which aims to build 1,000 quake-resistant houses for the victims.

NEW SCHOOLS

Another portion of the proceeds will be donated to build schools and orphanages for children who lost their parents in the massive quake.

Thai-Nepal Chamber of Commerce president, Krishna Sivakriskul, said at present there are around 60,000 Thai tourists who travel to Nepal each year.
