New monument

A truck on July 23 transports part of a giant statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great from Nakhon Pathom to a new park in Hua Hin. Statues of seven former kings will be erected at the park.

Police seize marijuana

Police and soldiers seized 420 kilogrammes of marijuana in Satun before it was smuggled over the border into Malaysia. The incident happened on July 21.

Acting on a tip-off, the authorities found 420 bars of dried cannabis, each weighing one kilogramme, hidden in a forest. The drug was hidden in 10 bags and covered up with a tent canvas. No suspects were arrested and police believe that they may have been alerted to the raid.


Head: Water woes

State cuts water usage

The national committee on water resources management has ordered state agencies to cut water usage by 10 percent to tackle the drought crisis, authorities said on July 22.

The newly-established panel, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, held its first meeting on July 22 at Government House.

Prayut said there is not enough water left in Thai dams. As a result, a water-saving programme is needed. “All parties must save water, especially the state,” he said.

Fried chicken

Animals killed in blaze

A fire destroyed a chicken farm in Khon Kaen. It happened on July 23. The blaze killed about 60,000 chickens. Police said an electrical problem caused the fire.
