Illegal tour guides arrested

A combined force of navy officers and Tourism and Sports Ministry officials arrested two Chinese nationals in Phuket for working illegally as tour guides in a crackdown on tour leaders working without a licence. The campaign started in Phuket on August 20.

The two Chinese nationals were checked by the authorities as they were escorting a group of Chinese tourists on a bus. Some of the tourists on the bus told officials the two illegal guides had extorted money from them and forced them to visit places that were not on their itinerary.

Woman free of virus

Blood tests cleared a 48-year-old Thai woman who was suspected to be infected with the Ebola virus and hospitalised on August 21. Opas Karnkawinpong, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said on August 22 that the woman’s temperature had been monitored every four hours and that she no longer had a fever.

Tests on her blood samples conducted by Chulalongkorn University came back negative for Ebola. The woman, who had been working in Liberia, flew back into Bangkok on August 20. She went to see a doctor at a private hospital the next day because she feared she might have contracted the virus.

Fatal collision

Four killed in crash

A lorry crashed into a passenger bus. It happened in Phayao’s Dok Kham Tai district on August 21. Four people were killed. Seven others were injured. The lorry was heading to Bangkok.
