Did you know

Nick’s younger sister is Nett from Candy Mafia.

Pop fans have probably already head about Evo Nine, Thailand’s hottest new boy band. The group caused a major stir with their recent performance at the Channel V Music Awards, where they made a big impression on the hundreds of teens in the audience.

With their good looks, catchy melodies and sharp dance moves, Evo Nine —Ratchanon Ruenpech (Gun), 16, Satapat Rattanotai (Rodtank), 20, Thammada Kunachahr (Wang), 19, Patiphat Kittigthakul (Nick), 19, Saranyu Sarutisut (Andrew), 21, Shitipat Sappayanon (Feem), 21, and Anavil Chartthong (Best), 23 — claim to be different from typical, manufactured boy bands.

The group spent numerous hours together mastering their craft, and the results can be heard with “Make You Dance,” their debut single that has been shaking up local dance floors.

All seven members of Evo Nine recently visited the Student Weekly office to chat about their music, their dancing and their latest release.

Student Weekly: Where did the name Evo Nine come from?

Rodtank: We put the words evolution and nine together. Nine is a homophone to a Thai word that means guy. So Evo Nine basically means the evolution of seven guys.

Feem: Many people wonder why we’re called Evo Nine when there are only seven of us!

Student Weekly: How long have you guys been working together?

Gun: Not too long. Each of us signed with Mono Music a few years ago. We were chosen to work on this project from more than 100 people who auditioned.

Student Weekly: You guys do a lot of dancing in your videos. Do you have much background in dance?

Rodtank: Wan, Nick and Gun are experienced dancers. Andrew and I had no dancing experience at all before joining Evo Nine.

Nick: Some of us had more skills and experience, but we all had to start from scratch when we started working together. We had to get to know each other and develop our own style.

Gun: With our hard work and dedication over the past three years, we managed to make our dancing look good in our video.

Student Weekly: How would you describe your particular style?

Wang: We call our style electronic new age pop. It’s basically dance music, but there are elements of hip-hop and electro, as well as the hypnotic feeling you can get from new age music.

Student Weekly: Can you tell us about your new single, “Make You Dance”?

Rodtank: “Make You Dance” is our first release. We decided to sing in English because the song will be released in Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea, as well as locally. But we’ll be releasing some Thai language songs soon.

Feem: The song is basically about asking a girl to dance at a club.

Student Weekly: What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

Gun: Each of us has different taste. My favourite band is the Bee Gees. I think Wan is really into dance and hip-hop, while Feem listens to pop-rock.

Andrew: Nick and I love slow pop ballads and chilled-out music.

Rodtank: There are some pop and dance music stars that we all enjoy, like Chris Brown, Rain and One Direction.

Student Weekly: How are Evo Nine different all the other boy bands around at the moment?

Gun: We’re all good at singing and dancing, and we have a lot of creative input.

Wang: Teamwork is definitely our strength. We’ve spend so much time working together that we’ve become like family now.
